I was in KC for a few days on business. All my colleagues raved about Jack Stack BBQ, the Freight House location. I had the hickory trout, slaw, and potato salad. All were amazing. I know that ordering fish at a BBQ joint is bad form in some circles. But it was so delicious. It came with a side of remoulade but it was not even necessary. The flavor of the trout stood up on it's own. The service was great. Quick and attentive. The ambience was super nice. I'm definitely coming back!
Great ambiance and service. I see why it's an iconic location in KC. That said -- I've had better BBQ. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but you are paying for the ambiance and atmosphere. The pulled pork and bbq overall were just ok.
The food was really wonderful. Only giving 4 stars because the wait to eat was so long and the line for the bar was long too. I loved the mood of the restaurant! I'll be back!
A good Kansas City BBQ spot. I recently went here with several friends for a weekend dinner and we were seated immediately at our reservation time. The ambiance is a classic steakhouse vibe, with lots of dark wood, signs, and animal decorations. Our service could have been a little better but was overall fine. We shared several dishes (see pictures below). I would order the brisket and corn bread again, but the wings and burnt ends were merely OK.
I wasn't able to make it here on my first layover so I was determined to do so on my second. To put it plainly, I walked in alive with an appetite and I practically had to drag myself back to the hotel after I was done; that's how good the food is. I don't eat pork/bacon so my review is based on beef only. I sat at the bar being on a date with myself and was served by Hannah who is awesome. Not being able to decide on what to try, I opted to try a bit of everything which included beef burnt ends, brisket and crown of beef prime rib. Brisket - a little on the dry side but it was a busy Friday night so perhaps that was the reason. Burnt ends - I had to stop myself from wiping these out because they were perfectly barbecued. Crown of beef prime rib - hands down, this was the winner and I am not wasting my appetite or time on any other meat on my next visit. It is seasoned to perfection, moist, tender and practically falls off the bone. Great ambiance! The place is lively and there's spots to sit outside. I look forward to returning!
Food was great with the exception of the burnt ends, they were extra fatty and not "burnt" enough to make them edible. Service was good, sides were good, ambiance was nice with a very nice facility and very clean. Cool style with the old brick building with modern interior.
Highly recommend you get a reservation before going. We walked in at 5 pm and got a 830pm table reservation. They "close" at 9pm. As we walked back to our car, I got an online reservation for 530 pm. We ordered Kansas City combo's 2 & 3 meats. We shared Baby back ribs, pulled pork, brisket beef ribs and through a kitchen error we tried the burnt ends too. Sides of delicious fries and hickory pit beans. The brisket was so tender, cut with a fork melt in your mouth yummy. The baby back ribs were juicy and tender, just short of fall off the bone. It was smokey and moist. I loved the beef ribs, I'm going to have to try the Crown Prime Beef rib next time with beef ribs and the baby backs. There is a large covered outdoor patio as well as a cavernous inside dining room with a horseshoe shape bar you can eat at if there are any empty seats. The house was packed inside and out and outside was hot at 90°f or higher.
This was a in large industrial building with plenty of seating in the dining area or bar along with some private rooms it looked like. The service was appreciated, and the menu offered lots of BBQ choices. For a starter, the smoked jalapeno cornbread ($11) was ordered. It came with honey butter and served in a small cast iron skillet. This was moist and good. The smokiness factor was definitely noticed along with the corn. The jalapeno was there, but I would have preferred even more. I went with the pick three Kansas City combo ($23.50) for my entrée. I was able to pick three meats along with a side. I went with the turkey, pork burnt ends, and pork spareribs along with the cheesy corn bake. The turkey was not bad. It was a little dry and I was not a big fan of the BBQ sauce that was given as a side. The pork burnt ends were solid while the ribs were my favorite meat tried. The meat was extremely tender and fell right off the bone. The corn bake was more like a soup than I would have thought, but it was great. It was not overly cheese and there was plenty of it. I also tried the hickory pit beans, which were also tasty. Will I go back? Probably.
New to KC area and heard from a friend who used to live in Overland Park that Jack Stack was her favorite KC BBQ spot, so I went with my boyfriend and my parents to try it. We ordered two Kansas City Combo Pick-3s and one side of garlic broccoli, and all were more than sufficient to feed the 4 of us. The meats we picked for the pick-3s are baby back ribs, beef ribs, lamb ribs, crown prime beef rib, beef burnt ends, and beef brisket. We got a side of fries and subbed the second side for coleslaw. Skip the beef ribs, but definitely Do NOT pass up the crown prime beef rib!! It was so tender and melts in your mouth, the regular beef ribs pale in comparison. The lamb ribs are slightly gamey, but not too bad. The rest of the meats were par for the course, very good! But nothing as notable as the crown prime. Yum. Sides were just ok. I'd also recommend you skip the garlic broccoli, as it was just ok. We also got 3 different flavors of lemonade: strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry. I think the strawberry and raspberry lemonades were way too sweet for our palates. The blackberry lemonade was refreshing and crisp, still sweet but not overbearingly. Also, our server was incredible. I forgot his name, but we made sure to give him a good cash tip. My dad spilled his beer after finishing half of it, and the server joked about how it was a great way for him to get a free refill of beer. He also checked up on us a lot. He told the kitchen to split each pick-3 into two plates so that it was easier for us to share among the 4 of us, which was really nice of him and something that is not often offered. Incredible. Probably the only regret I had was sitting outside. We came within an hour of closing, so we just wanted the first available seating so we could leave before the staff got too annoyed with us. But outside had a ton of mosquitoes, and we all got eaten alive. We asked to be moved to another table, but by the time another table was cleared, we had already gotten all the food and decided it was too much work to migrate to another table. If you're prone to bug bites, come earlier than we did and request indoor seating, it's probably worth the extra wait. Overall great bbq spot. Would return again. Undetermined on who's better, this or Joe's.
